When Linda got started in the winemaking business over 30 years ago, she had never tasting the nectar she sought to make. The self-taught winemaker at RagApple Lassie Vineyards broke into the business when there were few female winemakers. “It’s an interesting business because even when I was the only one, it didn’t make any difference. I was never treated any differently [because I was a woman],” she says. Today, women are still a minority in the industry, but Linda is working to kick that statistic.

While most women might run from ghosts, Sarah runs toward them, coaxing them from the woodwork with other members of her (mostly female) paranormal investigation team. “When we meet other groups it’s more common for men to be involved,” she says. Sarah became interested in the paranormal when, as a child, she was visited by the spirit of her grandfather.

The word “doula” is an ancient one meaning “woman’s servant” in Greek. However, as a modern day profession in Winston-Salem, doulas are more rare than ancient. “This area has come along slowly,” Wenda said of the small percentage of doulas in the city. What a doula actuallydoes is provide educational, physical, and emotional support for the mother and father throughout the birth process. “There’s a saying that we ‘motherthe mother,’” she said.

Cindy Valliere + Bryan Peterson

Bryan was about to pull the plug on internet dating when he met Cindy, a life coach and on/off eHarmony for many years. The weekend before Cindy met Bryan, she finalized her vision board, a detailed map of images and words of what she desired most in a relationship. Five months after their first date, they officially made switch from broad band to wedding bands: they plan to marry later this year.

Cindy: “The thing I saw from the start was an open-minded man that would help me reach my life goals and wouldn’t be intimidated by the woman I’d become.”

Bryan: “I had always hoped that I would find someone with an inner beauty to match their exterior beauty and Cindy is just that person. I couldn’t be happier.”

Robert Reister and Ana Tampanna

It may not have been love at first sight, but for Robert and Ana it was pretty darn close. They met at the Black Gold Jubilee in Bell Glade, FL. Ana was dressed as the Salad Queen; Robert was her bodyguard. One week later, Robert made the four hour trip to Ana’s home in Orlando to bring her two fresh bushels of corn. They’ve been married for 27 years.

Robert: “What can I say? She was just outrageous.”

Ana: “I think what attracted us was that we were both people that wanted to be more. It became a life of surprises for us both.”

Dr. David and Christine Bohle

The Bohle’s know that a key part of a healthy relationship is a healthy heart. David, a cardiologist on staff with Forsyth Medical Center, and Christine have kept theirs going strong through 26 years of marriage. The pair also strongly support women’s cardiology research. In honor of their advocacy, visit goredforwomen.com.

David: “She stole my heart from the first time I met her back in college.”

Christine: “Oh, he’s so funny! He brings a lot of laughter to our marriage and our family and that’s some of the best medicine there is.”

Sandie Taylor - Working (for the) Woman

Sandie is a feminist that gets right down to business. “I don't regret going back to school for an MBA,” she says. “Even though the program at Wake Forest is currently male-dominated and pushes me to my workload limits, it’s forcing me to find my voice in the classroom, which is often an unpopular, feminist one.” Before coming to Wake, Sandie worked for a Latina teen magazine in Austin, Texas called Latinitas. Though her work at Latinitas was incredibly fulfilling, she realized that having her MBA would allow her to do more. She eventually plans to bring her business savviness to a non-profit aiding women and girls. In the meantime, she’s an acting activist in the classroom. “I’m developing a reputation,” she says. “Now, when there’s a diversity or women’s issue, everyone starts looking to me.” Sandie blogs regularly on Working for the Woman, sandietaylor.wordpress.com.

Lawren Desai - Film Curator

Most people don’t regret leaving. “I don’t regret coming home,” says Lawren. After bouncing between Los Angeles and New York City, pursuing dreams of filmmaking and production, Lawren returned to Winston-Salem. She graduated with her MBA from Wake Forest in 2004 and she started a family. Now she’s bringing a bit of the big city to Winston-Salem with the independent theatre, a/perture. “A friend told me it’s the perfect marriage of my interests,” she says. The cinema is located downtown and houses two, 80-seat theaters. The film genres range from independent, foreign, and art-house. “They’ll be award-winning films that aren’t already being screened here,” she says. Though Lawren thought she would never move back, it seems she’s found her place. “I’m exactly where I want to be now,” she says.

a/perture plans to draw back the curtain Friday, January 8. Visit aperturecinema.com for more info.

Cotillia Willaims - Faithful Woman

Cotillia is a woman of faith. It’s what got her through the death of her husband in 2006, her close friend in 2008, and her cousin in 2009. And it was faith that consoled her when she chose to bring five children into the empty home she was to share with her husband, children widowed by the deaths of her cousin and friend. Today there is a new family that cooks dinner in the kitchen where Cotillia once sat up nights painting a mural of a tree. “I added a limb each time I felt like I was going to give up,” she says. It’s a home full of laughter and grieving and love and hope. “I wanted one [child] and I wanted it to be mine, but now God has managed to give me five,” she says. “I don’t regret leaning on Our Father. I don’t regret taking in the kids, the love, loving my husband. I am so grateful and so full.”

Jan Detter - Mosaic Artist

There’s just something about Jan. Soft-spoken, though out-spoken, you’ll need to keep pen and paper by your side to note her elegant aphorisms. Jan is a mosaic artist and an artist in residence, most recently with the fifth graders of Cook Elementary School, a residency made possible by the Downtown Rotary Club. Her challenge to all her students is not to teach them how to make art, but to show them that they have a place in the art world. “Because I do mosaic, people want me to teach them mosaic. You can get a book for that. I teach them to use the form of mosaic to tell a story.” Jan jumpstarts her creative juices by spending time with fellow artists, but her relationship with the Muse is of more malleable form. “Historically the Muse is seen as a person, and entity. I don’t visualize her that way. I see the Muse as moments of extraordinary awareness. Gifts from another world. When the muse is with me, I feel like she’s saying ‘Go girl. Take the leap.’”

Tiffany Chaney - Poetess

Tiffany’s muse doesn’t call her to one art. She calls her to many. The recent graduate of Salem College is a studio and graphic artist, a writer of prose and poetry, and the creator of the new webzine, Poesis. The title of the online creative arts magazine stems from Plato’s Republic. “The text talks about how the arts are a force for change. The arts to Plato seemed something to be in awe of but also a potential danger. Poesis, as a publication, is about revolution in small creative ways,” she says. The hybrid pub focusing on Mus(e)ic reviews, literature, and visual art, will publish online three times per year as PDF flip book, and will produce an annual print anthology. When asked what jump starts her creative process, Tiffany reveals a fusion of solitude, writer’s group meetings, coffee and underground music. Her creative hour is 4am.To learn more about Poesis, visit poesismag.com.

Rebeccah Rush - Glassblower

Rebeccah wants what most women want: bigger, and better. Only her wants apply to her trade -- glass blowing. “Glass for me has always been about the process, not the objects,” she says. The artist who refuses to own the title talks about the collaborative nature of the trade, one where “there are many ways to do something, and many right ways to do something, but only a few ways to be successful.” What inspires her is the challenge. “I love getting better, seeing myself improve. It takes years to become mediocre.” Currently, glass is challenging her in other ways. In 2012, she plans to open the community arts collective, The Olio, with her husband. As the first glassblowing studio in the Triad, The Olio will be a place where any and everyone can come to appreciate art and how it impacts our community. Read more about The Olio at theblogolio.wordpress.com.

Chevara Orrin – Advocate

Chevara is 5-foot powerhouse in 4 inch heels. As an advocate for change, she's leaving her mark on our fair city. She set up the first transgender panel at Winston-Salem State University, and helped found their first gay/straight alliance. She’s a passionate supporter of the Symphony, a privilege she maintains “should not just be for a privileged few.” She owns a gallery with her husband, White Space, where art is used to bridge the chasms of race. “I don’t do these things to be popular; I do them because they’re the right thing to do. If not now, then when?,” she says. “If not me, then who?”

My firsthand experience with poverty, domestic violence, incest, teenage pregnancy, single parenthood, and racism has contributed to my passion for affecting change in our community. I have come to deeply appreciate and value these experiences. I am more aware…more determined…and more empowered to work to improve the lives of others.

Penny LaBrecque -- Donor Advocate

Penny has a lot to be thankful for, and quite a bit to be thanked for. Sixteen years ago, Penny received a kidney transplant from her sister. Since then she’s felt the need to pay it forward. Last year her path was made clear when she accepted a position with the North Carolina Eye Bank. In 2008, The Eye Bank facilitated 3,440 corneal transplants, more than any other eye bank in the world. As the Family Care Coordinator, Penny consoles and uplifts transplant recipients and donor’s families. Her passion for organ donation, or as she calls it “the original recycling,” radiates from her.

Transplantation is the core of what defines me. I am a kidney transplant recipient, I am a donor advocate, I am passionate about life. I have witnessed the power of organ donation first hand, I have felt the love of a sister, and I have been humbled by her courage and grace.

Glynis W. Bell – Fashionista

Dress for Success is a national non-profit helping women get back in the workforce, and Glynis Bell is bringing the first affiliate to the Triad. She began looking into the organization in the early 2000s, but in 2007 she received the divine go-ahead after picking up a magazine with the founder on the cover. “It was the affirmation I needed to proceed,” she said. In addition to suiting up the community, Dress for Success also provides career help. “We don’t just give them the clothes and let them go,” she said. The organization hopes to start servicing clients in their 5th Street location by the first of the year. “The pieces of my passion puzzle are finally coming together.”

For as long as I can remember, I have had a passion for fashion. What better way to share my passion than through helping other women succeed? When you look your best, your confidence shines through.

Dena Webb | Breast Sonographer

The Secret to...

As a breast health technologist with Forsyth Medical Center Imaging – The Breast Clinic, it’s Dena’s job to be your bosom buddy. In her ten years on the clinic’s diagnostic floor, Dena has seen many mammaries – and many amazing women. "They have so much courage, so much grace,” she says. Although there is no known prevention for breast cancer, Dena's best precautionary advice includes a healthy diet, ample exercise, and conversations with family members about family history with the disease.

The secret to early breast cancer detection is a monthly self-exam starting at age 20, a yearly mammogram starting at age 40, and a yearly clinical breast exam by a health-care professional.

Kathy Smith | B-art-ender

The Secret to...

You can tell Kathy’s a good bartender just by listening to her talk about her craft – she’s a walking, talking metaphor. “My mom used to say there’s an art to being Southern,” says Kathy. “Well, there’s also an art to being a good bartender.” When she’s not behind the bar, whipping up her infamous mojioto, you’ll likely find her baking: for herself, for friends, or for Chelsee’s Coffee on Trade St.

The secret to a great mojito is the quality and freshness of ingredients, an inventive recipe, balance, and artful presentation. What makes my mojito distinctive is the right combination of mint, lime, and sugar mixed with two types of rum for depth.

Shari Crangle – Interior Designer

Shari may be the front-woman in this photo, but that’s not the big picture. Actually, it’s hard to separate Shari from partners-in-crime, Melissa Ward and Amy Poole. The trio makes up IDEAS Interior Design and Art Studio on Burke Street. “When we first got together it was amazing,” said Shari. “The energy was just incredibly palpable.” Each brings something different to the drafting table – Shari specializes in architecture and renderings, Melissa in furniture and finishings, and Amy, a happy mix of the two and studio art. “Somebody has to be the weird one,” she says. Read their collaborative tip below.

“The secret to hanging pictures correctly is filling up the space. The bottom of your frame should be 6” off the sofa back; the center should be at eye level. To keep pictures level add Velcro to the bottom corners.”

Ginger Gallagher -- Martial Artist

If Ginger looks a little intimidating, there’s good reason. The accomplished martial artist is a seventh-degree black belt and co-owner of Karate International in Lewisville. The multi-sport athlete started karate when she was 13 years old and earned several top-four places in her age group at the 2008 U.S. Open. “We’re not just learning self-defense and martial arts,” she says. “We’re learning to stand up in front of people and have confidence in a variety of situations.” Ginger’s vigorous ambition also spills over into business pursuits. She used these tools to co-found MediaFit in 2004, a marketing and advertising agency designed to establish strong, long-term relationships with clients. A year later in 2005, Ginger took over Karate International and now instructs several courses, including a self-defense session because “everyone should be able to defend themselves.” To get defensive with Ginger and the rest of the KI crew join their up-coming self-defense starting September 10.

Laura Ormson -- Golfer

Laura Ormson has worn long, baggy, khaki shorts for the last time. As a member of the women’s golf team and a rising senior at Wake Forest, Laura is taking a stand against the outdated attire available to young female golfers. In an effort to add some bling to her swing, Laura created her own line of sportswear – Wear to Win. “There’s nothing meant specifically for the younger girl. It wasn’t necessarily a new idea, everyone agrees the clothes are this way – but we just did it.” In collaboration with her mother and talented friends from Parsons New School of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago, Laura’s designs are making their way into the sports world and the skirt! World. See the Skirt of the Month page to check out one of her Wear to Win designs.

Mari Jo Winkle Turner -- Hiker

Mari Jo is a fund hiker: She’s the director of development for the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. “Basically I find the funds to offset projects not supported by the Department of the Interior,” she said. The dollars back much-needed Parkway projects in all 29 Parkway counties. A hiker herself, twenty years and climbing, Mari Jo says her most important job is building relationships with the Foundation’s major donors. “We want them to realize their support is really important. We can’t make a difference without them.” Though she’s been directing development for over 20 years, Mari Jo has only recently combined her career with her passion for the mountains. Of her two months with the Parkway Foundation she says: “I’m here and loving it. I get to be up on the parkway, which is a beautiful office. And I get to meet people which I love doing.”

But when the rising senior at Forsyth Country Day traveled to the set of her favorite TV show, “The Office,” last year, that search ended. In pursuit of her passion for screenwriting, Anna recently attended the summer screenwriting program at the Interlochen Arts Academy. She was one of just ten students accepted.

Amy da Luz – Active Feminist

I am a Feminist because…

“…I am the mother of three boys. I won’t raise a daughter in this lifetime that will knock down glass ceilings (or walls…do we always have to be climbing up?), but I can raise three men who will seek out, support and celebrate women who do just that. I believe that is the next step in this journey to equality.”

Amy is a founding member of Paper Lantern Theatre Company and the producer of their first show “Dead Man's Cell Phone” by Sarah Ruhl, opening July 17. This fall, the professional actor will appear in the movie “Main Street” starring Ellen Burstyn, Orlando Bloom and Colin Firth. paperlanterntheatre.com.

Ruth E. Wining – Frank Feminist

I am a Feminist because…

“…I’m a non-conformist. I’m a woman, a mother, a career girl, passionate about fairness and equality. I don’t think about being a feminist because I haven’t had to. I can’t say ‘I don’t have a voice; I can’t do what I want or be who I want to be.’ If it wasn’t for the fervor of early feminist pioneers, I wouldn’t be half the woman I am.”

Senior Vice President of Public Relations and Social Marketing at Frank About Women, Ruthie is a loudmouth New Yorker who loves coffee and wine. In her spare time, you’ll probably find her running at the lake or lazy dazing at 6th & Vine.

Stacie Battjes – Tough Trainer

In a cage match of Xena vs. Stacie, Stacie would kick Xena’s ass and Xena would somehow feel good about it. I was 40, fat, out of shape and doing nothing to change it. Thanks to her, I’m now jogging three times a week and training for a 5K! She’s changed my life forever.

Stacie moved to Winston-Salem from Midland, Michigan in the fall of 2006. She loves ’80s music, Marshmallow Peeps, and her job as a certified personal trainer with Fleet Feet Sports. And when it comes to cake, she only eats the icing.
